Friends of Kolkata recognises the need for computer training and English Language classes to be accessible and available. Consequently, in collaboration with the Institute of Social Work, FoK has committed to supporting and funding the Computer and English Literacy Project.
This project will equip young Indian girls with basic computer and English literacy skills. It will improve their chance of future employment, thus helping them gain the independence they so passionately seek and fully deserve.

The Computer class is run three times a week at the ISW head office. Ten students from the Scholarship Programme attend the classes for ten weeks after this they gain a certificate in basic computer skills. As computers are increasingly part of everyday life learning these skills is very important to help the students chances of employment and success with their education.
The course is highly desirable course and has a 100% attendance rate. There are many more students who want to be covered and ISW also wants to cover more students. The class currently has just one computer as a result the classes can last upto two hours.
English classes are run 3 days per week for upto 3 hours each day.
On the recent volunteer visit the computer teacher was shown a blog set-up by Friends Of Kolkata to enable the students to keep in contact with FOK in Australia to update on their progress in the class and their studies. View some extracts from the blog below.
