Lekha Para, Friends of Kolkata (FOK) and Institute of Social Work’s (ISW) education centre, gives rural children who are living beside the railway station in Barasat vital support and guidance, helping them to stay on top of their formal studies and encouraging them to remain in school.
The school is open for 3 hours every morning to provide guidance and help from trained tutors as the children’s parents have no formal education and as such are unable to help with their study. Lekha Para is hoping to expand to provide two meals to the students each week and begin special classes on health, nutrition and hygiene.

With FoK’s funding and assistance, the centre will offer many children the unique chance to consolidate their learning in a helpful and supportive environment, guiding them towards an education that will open up opportunities for a better future.
Creating a supportive learning environment
The centre at Barasat provides students with vital support and guidance, helping them to consolidate their studies and strengthen their skills, effectively encouraging them to remain in school.
By supplementing their education, the centre allows children more opportunities to learn and to get the most out of their schooling, which will ultimately offer them greater empowerment and more choices for their future.
At present, there are 60 students enrolled, with around 45 regulars. Attending before school from 7 to 10 A.M., these students have the opportunity to expand on their formal studies and practice what they have learned, leaving them better equipped to continue their education and to follow on to greater employment opportunities.
In addition to study, the centre strives to help educate children on important development issues such as hygiene and nutrition, giving them a better chance to grow and learn in a healthy environment.
