There are more than 70 children enrolled in the Friends of Kolkata Scholarship Program attending Primary and High School in Barasat. The scholarships help the children continue their studies by paying school fees, providing books, food and transport costs where needed and invest in teaching these children and families about broader areas in education such as nutrition and hygiene.
Many of these children also use the Lekha Para Education Centre to supplement their education in the Barasat ISW school. This is avalaible to them as they live by the railway tracks in severe poverty.
The students who have accessed scholarships in Barasat would otherwise not be in school were it not for the intervention of ISW and the provision of this financial and broader educational and social support. Education is giving these girls a chance to grow and learn for the longest possible time in the education system.
In 2011 Friends of Kolkata went to meet these students at their school in Barasat where we not only saw their progress in a new school building but also were able to run a football, dance and art program with all the ISW school students.
This was particularly successful in giving the girls a new experience to grow their confidence and explore their creativity while having fun.
These programs included increased nutrition, the provision of supplies for sports and art within the school and a community day that dealt with social issues in the community through drama for parents and students to enjoy as well as training for the teachers.
